Vernon P. Hofer and
Joe Danny Hofer started Rural Manufacturing Company,
Incorporated in 1968. The first plant was established from a
group of farm buildings existing on Vernon's farm 8 miles west
on 1 1/2 miles north of Freeman, South Dakota. The first
building used was a Quonset type shop, and as business increased
it was necessary to build new structures and convert existing
farm buildings. Farrowing crates were the basic output of Rural
Manufacturing in the beginning. As more equipment was developed
and demand for it increased, employees were hired to help with
the manufacturing process. In the spring of 1976, it was decided
to start construction on a new plant along US Highway 81 just
north of Freeman, South Dakota.
Today, Rural Manufacturing produces
a full line of livestock equipment and is a dealer for well over
30 other leading livestock equipment manufacturers. The company
also custom manufactures a variety of products for other
businesses. The building standing at this present site measures
80 ft. x 230 ft. with an additional 30 ft. x 30 ft. enclosed
loading dock. In 1981, a 60 ft. x 164 ft. warehouse was erected
to the northeast of the main plant. The original building west
of Freeman which served as the first plant have been converted
back to their original use as farm buildings.
